about

Our ingrained cultural narrative is that when generations clash, the hero is the one who goes out and makes a way in the world alone. But there's always another side to the story, and I wanted to tell that one. The challenge was to use the same chorus three times and let the verses set it up so the meaning of the chorus was different each time. Cheated a bit on the last one (with "It's raining again").

This started with the memory of my dad cutting my hair, and me hating it. The larger background, of course, is Jesus’ story of the young man who betrays his father but eventually decides to return home, and gets a welcome he wasn’t expecting (Luke 15:11-32). Trying to think how to classify this musically, I thought of Peter Blegvad, The Blue Nile, and of one of my favourite FAWMers, @alboe , who introduced me to those artists
