The Art of Drinking

from Drinking songs for Sober Drunks by Bill White

/

lyrics

Thirty years ago I put the bottle down
Last night I went to the corner bar
And bought the house a round
Every single glass was raised
To cheer me with a toast
I touched the glass to my lips
Then poured the liquor down my throat
I hadnt tasted paradise
In thirty sacred years
The warmth spread through my body
And brought my sul to tears
Then I set my glass down
And waved the bar goodbye
I know what would have happened
If I kept on drinking with the guys

Drinking may well be a sin
but it isnt a disease
Its a moral inclination
like a Frenchman wth his cheese
An alki is a junkie
Who can resist another pop
Ive learned the art of drinking
Is knowing when to stop

Some say one drink is too many
And ten are not enough
Ex smokers go back to a pack a day
After daring to take one puff
As if a human being
is too weak to work his will
A sober drumk is still a drunk
Who walks the edge of Hell

So of you need a label
to keep from falling in
Call yourself an alcoholic
Put the shine back on your skin
But I think this AA business
Is a lot of bunk
If you keep on ordering
round after round
You are bound
To become a drunk

Drinking may well be a sin
but it isnt a disease
Its a moral inclination
like a Frenchman wth his cheese
An alki is a junkie
Who can resist another pop
Ive learned the art of drinking
Is knowing when to stop

Drinking is a pleasure
That most people enjoy
Whether on a girls night out
Or a night out with the boys
A glass of holiday cheer
Or a pint of ballpark beer
Sometimes when you dine
You want to drink a little wine

But there are some who get up in the morning
And their whole world is dead
Nothing comes alive
Until the liquor hits their head
Its an alternative reality
The one where drunkards dwell
There i heartbreak, sickness, and loneliness
In the Jack Daniels Hotel

Drinking may well be a sin
but it isnt a disease
Its a moral inclination
like a Frenchman wth his cheese
An alki is a junkie
Who can resist another pop
Ive learned the art of drinking
Is knowing when to stop
