The Art of Drinking

from The K-Mart Tapes Volume Five by Bill White

/

lyrics

Thirty years ago I put the bottle down
Last night I went to the corner bar and bought the house a round
Every single glass was raised to cheer me with a toast
I touched the glass to my lips then poured the liquor down my throat
I hadnt tasted paradise is thirty sacred years
the warmth spread through my body and brought my soul to tears
Then I set my glass down and waved the bar goodbye
I knew what might have happened had I kept on drinking with the guys

Drinking may well be a sin but it isnt a disease
Its a moral inclination like a frenchman with his cheese
An alki is a junkie who cant resist another pop
Ive learned the art drinking is knowing when to stop

some say one drink is too many and ten are not enough
ex smokers go back to a pack a day after daring to take one puff
as if a human being is too weak to work his will
a sober drunk is still a drunk who walks the edge of hell
so if you need a label to keep from falling in
call yourself an alcoholic and put the shine back on your skin
but i think this AA business is just a lot of bunk
if you keep on ordering another round, you are going to become a drunk

but drinking is a pleasure that most people enjoy
girls night out or a night with the boys
a glass of holiday cheer or a baseball park beer
sometimes when you tne you want to share a bottle of wine
but there are some who get up in the morning and the world is dead
everything comes alive when the liquor hits their head
its an alternative reality the ones where the drunkards well
theres heartbreak, sickness and loneliness in the jack daniels hotel
