Skin and Fur

from The Visit by Bill White

lyrics

Her skin so soft inflamed
By fur to the touch softer
And I would move my hand
Into her precious softness
As we fall to ocean’s floor.

The cat is at the door.
He knows she has returned
To stroke his long, white fur
And leave in scratching redness
That pales only in sleep.

And I would move my hand
Across the fragile stillness
Of her soft flesh inflamed
By haphazard caresses
As one might give a cat.

That such soft skin could hurt
The softer heart that wears it
Should wound a thoughtful lover
Who would selfishly caress it.
Because that very softness

Is the thing that brings her pain.
But the cat will always claw her door
And I will move my hand through her
Till we fall through spinning kisses
To the ocean’s floor
