the first two lines of the chorus ( eat the flesh of docile beasts
drink the blood of evil priests) occurred to me while watching taste the blood of dracula.it took a while to figure out where to go from there, but when i wrote "its hard to get by on bread and water when you are in love
with frankensteins daughter" i knew the song was destined to be a comic song. of course the frankenstein doesnt work, as the girl is definitely a daughter of dracula, but a movie had already been made with that title and besides, frankensteins daughter sounded better and evoked more. my first attenpts at versifying were failures, as I was approaching the song with a heavy handed blues interpretation. once i lightened uo, the song started working...and i like the way it evolved into an anti-carnivore tract from the point of view of a former vegan who now needed blood to survive.

it is not true
that artists are bad human beings
although the definiton
of a good human being
sometimes escapes me
i know that people who do not eat meat
have a higher consciousness
because when i was forced
to eat the meat of beasts
i became a beast myself
