Clotheslines in the Wind

about

The primary setting for a typical Yasujiro Ozu film is a domestic residence. He traditioally seperates each scene with a shot of some landmark or common neighbood sight, such as a clothesline. So I had the idea of a man who preferred staring at clothes blowing in the wind on clotheslines to interacting with real people on a day to day level. It seemed a decent metaphor for one who prefers to dream about things outside his immediate reality rather than fulfil the obligations of day to day life.

lyrics

VERSE ONE i had a tank full of whiskey
and a belly full of beer
in the night i took her home
and poured those lies into her ear
i was post-war and pre-modern
and she was like some lipstick ad
that promised glowing happiness
and gave you twenty shades of sad.

CHORUS I never declared my love for her
Nor she her love for me
Even had i meant it, I never would had said it
The only time I played that old violin
Was when I had my eyes
on some clothesline in the wind

throw your legs across the railing
try to catch a fish
if its shorter than your forearm
then its too small for your dish
throw it back into the river
remove the hook before it dies
you cant swat away people
like you swat away a fly

BRIDGE
i should have kept my wits about me
held my family close around me
instead of gazing up at things
that were not there
watching specks of life
burn down to cinders in the air

CHORUS I never declared my love for her
Nor she her love for me
Even had i meant it, I never would had said it
The only time I played that old violin
Was when I had my eyes
on some clothesline in the wind
