i like to say i was stuck in quicksand, but it was really just mud. it was up way past my waist and getting close to my mouth before my friend randy returned with his father to pull me out. i was in third grade when i knew i was born to be a writer. i had just discovered the topic sentence. realizing it contained the entire sense of the paragraph. i condensed 'the rise and fall of adolf hitler' tp sixty pages by simply copying out the topic sentences. my teacher was so impressed that she showed the paper to the school principal, who had me read the whole thing into a reel to reel tape recorder for the school achives. i wonder if it still exists. that same year, my mom ran around the neighborhood bragging that her 8 year old son had read 'war and peace.' but i hadnt really read it. i just turned the pages, looking at the words, sometimes mouthing them.
