Shoeless, he memorized his daily Emily
Before spilling his long, white beard into his soup
Then bare-footing it to the theatre
Where the actors and I
Were rehearsing his translation

It was rat-stinking hot that Summer

Lugging all his gear
Wheezing, up the hill to the studio
He had to go horizontal for half an hour
Before gathering the breath to sing
While the drummer and I
Made sure everyone had their charts
And were ready to kick some ass

It was slippery cold that Winter

Numb to dead, drinking
Alone, listening to all their chatter
Shop closed. the writers one and all unemployed
It was a funeral of the dead
