My mom's last words were "I want a boyfriend." During her life, she had plenty of them. When she was fifty years old, she took up with a nineteen year old farmhand. My sisters and I hated him so much that one night we took sledgehammers to his sports car. But at her funeral, he was the only one of her ex lovers who attended. It was then that I realized he had truly loved her. Her final wish had been granted.
lyrics
a modest gathering
of family and friends
some had come to say goodbye
some were there to make amends
everyone was quiet
there was not much to say
she was the village fool
and this was just another day
then steps were heard in the hallway
and the preacher stopped and put down his book
when the door into the chapel opened
everybody turned around to look
it was the teenage farmhand who had loved her
when all the hypocrites in town had judged her
he was the only one of the lovers she had taken
who had not forsaken her
when the service was over
and the mourners went off to eat
the boy who had loved her truly
remained in his seat
then he walked to the coffin
where she rested alone
lifted her gently
and carried her home
