HANGIN' TEN

from Stoner by Bill White

/

about

When surfboarding. sometimes you catch a big wave, and to keep yout balance, you have to run to the front of the board and hang ten toes over the edge of the nose. this might be a metaphor for taking quick action to get out of a jam. Before I started taking drugs in my mid teens, my life consisted of movies, motorcycles, biicycke chains, leather jackets, surfing, pool tables, pinball machines. cigarettes, rock and roll and protest albums, theatre, beach bunnies, and welfare broads, drugs transformed all that to poetry, chess, books, love ins, and jazz. to get from one lifestyle to another i had to hang ten more than once. i made it throgh unscathed, but a lot of my friends wound up first in reform school, then in prison, and some on death row.

lyrics

Beginnings are bound
In the bonds of trust
We dont go through life
Life goes through us
Of origins, we have none
In the wheels of time we are spun

Chorus There is no why
There is no when
The ocean moves
Like a watery wind
I break in the waves
Hanging ten

Some take their measure from trees
Some from the seas
Some from planets, some from stars
Some from the strings of a spanish guitar

Repeat Chorus

There is more life in this song
Then there ever was in me
The life that passes through it
Began not as a seed

Beginnings are bound
In the bonds of trust
We dont go through life
Life goes through us

Repeat Chorus
