This song is nihilist and existential. but I am neither an existentialist nor a nihilist. I dont believe in Sarte's I-It relations of the individual to the rest of the universe.I am more of an I-Thou person, and try to live up to Martin Bubers social ideals. Still, I cannot deny the huge influence nihilism and existentialism has had on the modern world, And I have to admit such philosophies held an attraction for me in my youth, abd I was always on about the Void. So for the final song on my Those October Feelings, a collection of songs about things that pass, an existential ending seemed appropriate. I think of what professor Harold Bloom said at the age of 89, when he was facing the inevitable. :At the end of KIng Lear, there is nothing."
lyrics
over the mountains of the moon
into the valley of shadow
we came all this way...for nothing
we walk through the shadows
of the valley of death
we came all this way...for nothing
from the jaws of the lion
to the belly of the whale
we came all this way...for nothing
give color and shape
to the rocks
your writing can be done by robots
from the dark wood
to the bright lights
we came all this way...for nothing
to the printed page
from the spoken words
we came all this way...for nothing
give language
to the rivers and streams
and music to applied machines
the grid is wiped
ourselves, unplugged
we came all this way...for nothing
