on that night in 1989
Bonnie Raitt won a grammy
for Nick of Time
I was with Ellen McIlwaine
She said God must have decreed
There be but one red headed woman
playing blues on a slide guitar.
and the music industry agreed
Alice, she was lucky
She didnt use a slide
She played blues with her fingers
And she sang them til she died
There never was a kinder person
Behind a blues guitar
Than my friend, Alice Stuart
The queen of the blues bar
The first time i heard her voice
Was on the telephone
She asked if she could sing a song
At my tribute to Phil Ochs
She had known him in the village
And loved his honest songs
And both believed that music
Was a force to right the wrongs
She caught a ride with Joan Baez
Down the coast highway
To the Berkeley festival
Where both were booked to play
Alice she was nervous
About singing for that crowd
But Joanie gave her confidence
To raise her voice loud
After auditioning for the mothers
She said Frank liked but couldnt use me
Said I had a strng musical sense
But could not play Louie Louie
She put out some pop records
But the competition was mean
So she moved up to Seattle
And made the folklore scene
The years they passed and friends got old
The world seemed born to lose
But Alice found her voice again
The day she sang the blues
For twenty years her guitar raged
And expressed the pain within
Now she is gone ill never see
The likes of her again
Alice, she was lucky
She didnt use a slide
She played blues with her fingers
And she sang them til she died
There never was a kinder person
Behind a blues guitar
Than my friend, Alice Stuart
The queen of the blues bar
