about

when i asked john olufs if he would object to my putting together an album f some of our earl work together, he told me to go ahead and use whatever i wanted. some of it might be embarrassing, but it will be fun to listen to. well, as i went through the tapes, i found most of the embarrassment was on my part, and most of the fun courtesy of john. we started playing together in 1975 or thereabouts, beginning with his teaching me a load of grateful dead songs, then us learning the country western cataa log of classics, and finally working on original material, whch resulted in wto groups, The Vines and the Dimes. At the same time we were playing punk venues wth The Dimes, we were holding court at a coffeehous on the UW campus with The Vines, just John and I playing psychedelic folk music with a mystical bent. Included here is one set by the Vines, as well as scattered cver tunes fromm ur first living room sessions, and finally, a couple of songs from a sketchy reunion jam in 1989, when i returned to seattle from boston for a visit. That was the last time we played together. Finishing off the set is a very poor audio recording of the robert Mitchum classic Thunder Road, from a party tape i the mid seventies. Despite the no fidelity, I had to include it because Johns performance is so good.
