A Song for this Gutteral Age
lyric by Bill White
In this guttural age,
Who would think of making
Sonnets from a woman’s gait?
Or songs from psalms
Broken under the cover of devotional
Ruin.
In this guttural age
Of therapeutic art magic,
Where is the song
Sung in yoga breath,
The song to part the seas
As it sings to isle-flung lovers.
Who would think of building
Stanzas instead of towers
In this guttural age
Where every brick
Is a brick flung into somebody’s back.
I can hear the voices singing,
The guttural voices singing,
Their songs for a guttural age.

Oh, Peter, go ring dem bells
Peter, go ring dem bells
Peter, go ring dem bells
I heard it from Heaven today
I wonder where my mother’s gone
I wonder where my father’s gone
I wonder where my brother’s gone
I heard it from Heaven today
Oh Peter, go ring dem bells
Oh Peter, ah, go ring dem bells
Peter, go ring dem bells
I heard it from Heaven today, oh, on it’s way
I wonder where brother Moses is gone
I wonder where brother Daniel's gone
Gone where Elijah's gone
I heard from Heaven today
I heard it…, from Heaven today 2x
I heard it from Heaven today oh thank God
I thank God, 2x and I thank you too
I heard..., from Heaven today 3x
Yes..., it-was-today

I say whoa
A chill ran up my sleeve
I say hey
Wanna get to know me
You say cheers
To the star-studded night
You say wow
The moon looks extra bright
And it shines, shines, shines
To warm up our hearts
And it feels fine, fine, fine
Like we’re superstars ( X 2 )
I say oooh
I’m dancin’ in my seat
I say dang
Is it 100 degrees
You say uh-huh
I know what you mean
You say uh-oh
There’s music singin’ me
And we shine, shine, shine
Together tonight
And it feels fine, fine, fine
A romantic delight ( X 2 )
Your smile is wild and my heart is feelin’ sweet
As we boogie together on every downbeat
And we shine, shine, shine
Together tonight
And it feels fine, fine, fine
A romantic delight ( X 2 )
Shine, shine, shine
Shine, shine shine
Fine, fine, fine
oo-oo-oo-ooh!
And we shine, shine, shine
Together tonight
And it feels fine, fine, fine
A romantic delight

February falls into the slot we've made, a Roman II, a Chinese New Year
And all the time is lost again, a vanishing pen writes resolutions
Look out the window, wait for the moon to rise, wait for the falling snow
The bands abandoned, the plans we stole, we're all going solo
A photo of a rainbow against the wet gray sky above the house where I used to live
The old year's dog jumping against the sleeping new year's pig
I think my mother was crying, my sister's hiding the address of her new home
So the envelopes have no words, they're just crimson red, with the edges all ringed in gold
In gold
Wait, the sleet strikes the pavement
With the sound of far-off applause
The train's at the station
While the microphone falls
The month pulls in its claws
And sits in the window to wait
So hold me, the snow is falling
Our bodies will carve the cold like lightning
Elliott sings Miss Misery like the winter descending into my ear
Like the last thing that I'll ever hear
Words in an aviary, learned by ear, learned by sensation
Mysterious as kiwi birds, as deep sea beasts, as radio waves, and
When I was a child I thought that happiness meant to fall so fast
But now time tumbles and seesaws down out from my grasp
And I want it to last
Wait, the sleet strikes the pavement
With the sound of far-off applause
The train's at the station
While the microphone falls
The month pulls in its claws
And sits in the window to wait
So hold me, the snow is falling
Our bodies will carve the cold like lightning
Elliott sings Miss Misery like the winter descending into my ear
Like the last thing that I'll ever hear
I count it in three
So hold me, the snow is falling
Our bodies will carve the cold like lightning
Elliott sings Miss Misery like the winter descending into my ear
Like the last thing that I'll ever hear
I count it in three

1, One paw at the fence
My eyes no longer see
My tail no longer wags
Why did you do this to me?
Hevay Rain on my nose
I can will no longer bark
But you sir shall know I miss
All our long walks in our park
Once I was loved
Once I was adored
But Now I am standing
Alone
2, New people every week
But I an not thei one
All puppys that they chose
Are cute, cuddly and fun
But I have been so scared
Still I try to do my best
But all people passing by
Looking for the next
Once I was loved
Once I was adored
But Now I am standing
Alone
But Now I am standing
Alone

I know there's more than you're willing to tell
Cause I've seen your secrets in the place they dwell
But in the silence after the storm
When I think of you petrichor
Is there no where better than this?
To make up for all the days we've missed
But we've been down this road before
Just driftwood washed up on the shore
Like pieces of the people we once were
Cause when a lover has come and gone
Some of that love still carries on
And I always thought I'd see you once more
Petrichor
Now are you feeling dragged down into the mire?
While all around you flowers are reaching higher
And all the hours spent chasing ghosts
Losing sight of what matters most
Is there no where better than this?
To let go of all the days we've missed
Cause we've been down this road before
Just driftwood washed up on the shore
Like pieces of the people we once were
But when a lover has come and gone
Some of that love must carry on
Cause I always thought that I'd see you once more

if the stones were the beatles
and the beatles were the stones
and the ones who pick the harvest
are just here to rob your homes
then the time has come when nobody
can tell the truth from lies
if bernie sanders is not a democrat
neither am i
chorus
neither am i neither am i
of bernie aint no democrat
then neither am i
romeo asked juliet
what is in a name
if you were called brunhilda
would i love you just the same
the sky is the ocean
the ocean is the sky
and bernie sanders is not a democrat
neither am i
repeat chorus
hes head to head with FDR
that means hes standing tall
and those who stand against him
they dont count at all
hes not out to split the ticket
he is here to save your hides
but if bernie sanders is not a democrat
neither am i
repeat chorus
you call the moon the sun
and call the sun the moon
just keep up your slander
and youll be out of here pretty soon
we will win with a third party
and i will tell you why
if bernie sanders is not a democrat
neither am i
repeat chorus

I'm here in my Gated Community
In the place where I sit every day
I smile at the faces that enter
And wave to those going away.
Here in my Gated Community
I read Hemingway in paperback
My radio's tuned to rancheras,
In the cool of my gate-keeping shack.
Olé, olé, América
My parents came up from Honduras
In the 80s before I was born,
They worked in the meat-packing factory
And sweated de-tasseling corn.
Now I'm here in my Gated Community
In a place that is mine but it's not,
And I watch the old men go for breakfast
And a ten o'clock teeing-off slot.
Some are kind and they're mostly all friendly,
And I don't really hate them at all,
I just wish I could tell them politely
They don't need to live behind a wall.
Olé, olé, América
It's not really a question of politics
And I'm sure they don't think that it's race,
It's a question of keeping their money
And of other folks keeping their place.
And they're sad that their country's divided
But they're all Red and White against Blue
They forget that the colors they're waving
Are the colors of brown people too.
So tonight they go out to a rally
And will cheer for the Great Leader who
Has promised to make the whole country
A Gated Community too.

Tonight no rain's going to come
and take the heat from the sun
and I walked with your words
spilling into the street I was on
Through the dryness felt the softest
waves asking to be saved
where the gate to the garden
was locked was dark was wrong
The non-believer stood still
wrapped in weapons called truth
that she fired without thought
of her lives came alive
And she wasted her time
trying to win over the world
she was shooting me down
and for a while there was ground
But there was love to be found
where the river sings without sound
and the path winding down
was where we went, where we went
There rain dances in the dark
as the dry grasses that shade
the linen like leaves
of the dreams that we weaved
and I can feel what you feel
and the sky holds the stars
and you're holding the world
and you said you'd give it to me
and for a while it seemed real
as the rain dances down
yeah the rain dances down

Clouds in the corners of my head
Say things best left unsaid
They gather together
To form another
Head
Floating atop this head
Like a trouble-
filled thought bubble
Head atop head
Fizzling away again
Head atop head
Brewing something bad again
It’s sometimes gray, sometimes purple
And it’s filled with people
Oh, the strangest people
Falling to Earth from the highest steeples
Of churches built of black mist
And gloom amidst
Landscapes never kissed
By the sun
Or anyone
And from the corners of this head
Sprouts another head
And this one’s meaner than the rest
It won’t let me think or rest
Three heads stacked vertically
Intent on tormenting me
Three heads are three
Heads too many
So with some difficulty
I remove all three
