A Dream of You
02:19
|
|||
Go to sleep now
Or the world will stop its spinning
When you awake
You will be someone else
Id rather be a ghost
Still able to see you
Than a newborn baby
With no memory
I would watch you dance
Like cloud on a river
As you sail through the years
Of a new century
Let me fall
Into a dream of you
Until I wake
Beside you again
Yesterday we stood in a garden
Wet with rain
And looked into a sky
That will never be the same
LIke the sun and the moon
Everything keeps moving
We are all a part
Of that circle game
Let me fall
Into a dream of you
Until we wake
In the garden again
Let me fall
Into a dream of you
Until I wake
Beside you again

#9 Prentiss Street
03:58
|
|||
On the corner of second and union
The #9 bus passed me by
2 hours til the next one
And its getting dark outsid
12 miles from home
And im only 8 years old
Guess ill walk up to the embassy
watch another movie til the time goes
#9 Prentiss Street
Turns west on Yesler Way
Then south down Rainier Avenue
And circles round the lake
When i see the yellow grocery store
I ring the bell to stop
Make sure i didnt drop anything
Walk the hill into Bryn Mawr
4th Avenue and Madison
Red brick YMCA
Take the elevator down to the swimming pool
Then up to the gym to play
2 cents for a movie 5 cents for a coke
Costs nothng to watch the old men
Play pool in the cigar smoke
I like the popcorn at Woolworths
And the candy at G. O. Guy
Movie posters in the windows
Of reprographics shop I walk by
But i never get lost
Looking up past the marquees
Space Needle to the North
Smith Tower to the South of me
Then i followed my father
Through the Black Hills into Badlands....
Until i reached the place where childhod ends.....
Running back, the 9 becomes a 7
And never goes to Prentiss Street again
From the top of Queen Anne Hill
I looked down at the fair
Followed the road beneath the monorail
Until i got to who knows where
I took the money my mother gave me
To ride the bus to the YMCA
Bought a ticket to a triple feature
And rode home on the escalator
Through the floors of the bon marche
#9 Prentiss Street
Turns west on Yesler Way
Then south down Rainier Avenue
And circles round the lake
When i see the yellow grocery store
I ring the bell to stop
Make sure i didnt drop anything
Walk the hill into Bryn Mawr

Woke up this morning with a knife in my head
Tried to pull it out but it was dripping red
Mama called the doctor and the doctor said
Give him 3 cups of coffee then send him back to bed
They gave him a medal for killing a man
Then threw him in the brig for kissing a man
Remember what they did to Dr. Frankenstein
When they caught him in the basement making a man
Woke up this morning with a knife in my head
Tried to pull it out but it was dripping red
Mama called the doctor and the doctor said
Give him 3 cups of coffee then send him back to bed
I aint the genie in the lamp to fulfill your wishes
But I can fill your face with 1,000 Karat kisses
She loves him an I love her
We are the ruins of literature
God made the world a very nice place
But he gave it away and we laid it to waste
Woke up this morning with a knife in my head
Tried to pull it out but it was dripping red
Mama called the doctor and the doctor said
Give him 3 cups of coffee then send him back to bed
Im not doing anything to bring me closer
To whatever it was I am looking for
I came into this world huffin and puffin
Then the wolf came along and blew down my door
Does He still have the whole world in his hands
Or is he juggling on his fingers a marching band
Im sitting on my ass and my ass is sore
As I watch 1,000 armies marching to war
Woke up this morning with a knife in my head
Tried to pull it out but it was dripping red
Mama called the doctor and the doctor said
Give him 3 cups of coffee then send him back to bed

Pan-American Highway
02:56
|
|||
How do you know which way to go?
When to turn, when to go straight?
Are we here yet?
No, we are not even near yet
Oh Daddy, its getting late
When will we get to the
Pan-American Highway
Along the Pacific sea
Pan-American Highway
With Mama, Daddy, and Me
Look out yonder. Its the Bridge of the Americas
We are crossig over to the other side
There will be no Elvis waiting thre for us
The water is deep and the river is wide
We are riding on the
Pan-American Highway
Along the Pacific sea
Pan-American Highway
With Mama, Daddy, and Me
We could take an ocean liner or a jet plane to Spain
Or stay on this highway til Hell freezes over the Western Plains
Pan-American Highway
Along the Pacific sea
Pan-American Highway
With Mama, Daddy, and Me

Nobody talks on this train
So put a kryptonite lock on your brain
Keep your mouth shut tight
As a crocodiles bite
Nobody talks on this train
Keep your thoughts to yourself
Dont pass them on to nobody else
They wil powder your behind
If you dare speak your mind
So keep your thoughts to yourself
I know the night doesnt have 1000 eyes
And none of these walls have ears
But for every move you make
and every word you say
There is someone who sees and hears
Dont ever raise your hand in school
This is not a gag. Its a rule
They will take you outside
Put some lead in your hide
If you dare raise your hand in school
Nobody talks on this train
So put a kryptonite lock on your brain
Keep your mouth shut tight
As a crocodiles bite
Nobody talks on this train

One Less Dog
02:46
|
|||
They put a gun in your ear
to shut your mouth
If you dont comply
you get a ticket South
One less dog in the street
One less cat in the alley
One less fish in the sea
One more grave in the Valley
I dont remember a thing
no matter how hard I was try
I was just a boy then
my country was tiny and dry
One less dog in the street
One less cat in the alley
One less fish in the sea
One more grave in the Valley
Some say he died at sunset
some say sunrise
The lever was pulled at midnight
Thats when he opened his eyes
One less dog in the street
One less cat in the alley
One less fish in the sea
One more grave in the Valley

You Told Me to Call You
02:59
|
|||
They made a movie about us
It wasnt any good
So we made one about them
And it was worse
But we played it straight
As if every scene were real
Then we said our goodbyes
And dispersed
Some went back to California
I heard someone say Arizona
They disappeared like ghosts
Into city and town
You told me to call you
I said i dont have your number
And you didnt then even make a move
To write it down
i hate these goodbyes
People kissing one another
Promising to meet for lunch
One of these days
And if they meet by accident
On a street corner in Manhattan
They will repeat the promise
Then go their seperate ways
Some will go to California
I heard someone say Arizona
They disappeared like ghosts
Into city and town
You told me to call you
I said i dont have your number
And you didnt then even make a move
To write it down
the woman you played in the movie – she aint around no more
was i a fool to believe she was ever here before
So im heading to the airport
Without a suitcase or a ticket
Dont know where im going
And i dont really care
The only bad thing about it
No matter where im landing
nobody I have ever known
Will be there
Some will be inCalifornia
I heard someone say Arizona
They disappeared like ghosts
Into city and town
You told me to call you
I said i dont have your number
And you didnt then even make a move
To write it down

The Roads I Used to Walk
02:28
|
|||
My fingers on the vines
As i crawl from the ravine
I climb the stairs up to the cliff
To a place id never seen
I cut through yards and living rooms
Chased by snakes and dogs
Looking for the roads i used to walk
The planets cannot guide me
When the clouds in freedom run
And the morning star is blotted out
By the midnight sun
Ive got a map and compass
But still keep getting lost
As i try to find the roads i used to walk
The storefront that was yellow
Has since been painted red
And the gutter where i kissed her
Is a sculpted river bed
The triple feature movie house
Is a supper club for swanks
And the psychedelic circus
Is a cashless global bank
I almost made it when the bus
Took an unexected turn
Some people never know
What others never learn
Theres no one left to tell me
As i near a nearby block
That ill never find the roads i used to walk
