i used to travel the country
coast to coast
my voice was like a bell
now im just an old man
with a passel of stories to tell
when i wrote my first songs
i had nothing to say
and i sang in the corners
of empty cafes
until my girl up and left me
with a broken heart
and the song i wrote for her
went to the top of the chart
my next songs didnt make it
and i was always about to quit
but its amazing how far
you can go on just one hit
in any town or city
i could fill three hundred seats
that was enough to keep me going
til i admitted i was beat
i used to travel the country
coast to coast
my voice was like a bell
now im just an old man
with a passel of stories to tell
i ate the fruits of paradise
and did some time in jail
women soaked in whiskey
lined up to go my bail
i cant say i am proud
of every part i chose to play
but i sure had some times
and now i see ive had my day
i used to travel the country
coast to coast
my voice was like a bell
now im just an old man
with a passel of stories to tell
